New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress on Monday demanded stern action against Maoists in the wake of another attack in Chhattisgarh on Monday evening.

"The nation has to stand together against Maoist terrorism. There is need for strong, firm action as it affects security and safety of the country. We cannot have islands where writ of government does not run," said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.

She said while development has to reach Maoist-affected areas, security forces have to open access to these areas for government agencies to properly implement welfare measures.

Asked about the responsibility of the BJP-run Chhattisgarh government as Monday's attack was the second big incident in over a month, Sitharaman said that no state alone can tackle the Maoist problem.

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said the government will take stern measures to tackle Maoists and defeat them.

"These acts prove that they are desperate and are absolutely inhuman and barbaric. Attacks like these will only encourage the government to take stern action against them and defeat them. There acts are heinous and they have to be crushed as soon as possible."

Asked about some Congress leaders suggesting that Maoist problem should not be seen only an law and order issue, Tewari said there was no contradiction between the government and the Congress party.

"We both believe that any form of violence has to be dealt with sternly. Another important issue which has to be addressed immediately is finding the reasons behind volunteers joining such groups," he said.

Tewari said the government clearly understands the situation and will do all that is necessary to tackle the Maoist threat.

At least 27 Special Police Officers (SPOs) and civilians were killed when Maoist guerrillas blew up a bus in a forested stretch in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, the same region where they slaughtered 76 security personnel over a month ago.
