New Delhi: With its government cornered in both houses of Parliament over the Land Acquisition Bill, the BJP has constituted an eight-member committee to look it and invite suggestions from people, including farmers.

BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday constituted a committee consisting of MPs and farmers' representatives.

The members include former Union minister Satyapal Malik, chartered account Gopal Agrawal, MPs Bhupendra Yadav, Ramnarayan Dudi, Hukumdeo Narayan, Rakesh Singh, Sanjay Dhotre and Suresh Angadi.

The committee's work will be to elicit opinions of different sections of the society including the farmers who are the most important stakeholders in the Bill.

The timing of the formation of the committee may be questioned because it comes at a time when the Modi government is facing stiff resistance from the opposition parties as well as its allies in the Parliament. The BJP is isolated over the issue. The committee could have been formed when the government had promulgated an ordinance on Land Acquisition.

With the Bill getting tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, critics may raise question over the extent of contribution the committee can make now in the improvement of the Bill.
