New Delhi: The war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress hit a new low with both the parties targeting leaders from the opposing camp. BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's Kanpur rally in Uttar Pradesh led to strong reactions from the Congress after the Gujarat Chief Minister lambasted Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress, as expected, launched a blistering attack on the Gujarat strongman, going to the extent of calling him Adolf Hitler.
In Kanpur, Modi hit out at Congress with a point-by-point rebuttal of Rahul Gandhi's claims on development, Food Security Bill and on being pro-poor. "Rahul is born with a silver spoon in his mouth, how would he know what is poverty," asked Modi. "UPA government is working for the benefit of the rich people but isn't bothered about the poor," he said.
Hours later, the Congress spokesperson drew parallels between Narendera Modi and Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Union Minister Manish Tewari said the Gujarat Chief Minister's idea to rebrand India via cinema reminds him Hitler using Berlin Olympics to rebrand Germany.
"There was a man, BJP's projected Prime Ministerial candidate, who was in Mumbai a few days back. When he talked about using the Indian cinema or the film industry to brand India, I was struck by this thought that way back in in 1936, another gentleman wanted to use Berlin Olympics for a similar branding. That mark of Swastika still haunts a lot of people around the World," Tewari said on the sidelines of a function.
BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi hit back at Tewari and said that "so far as the history of India is concerned, the only dictator this country has seen happens to be Indira Gandhi who is also part of the history of Congress party."
Congress also went on to compare Modi's rallies with circus shows "which also fetch crowd" and questioned his understanding of foreign affairs. "Do not measure one's strength from one's obesity. Famous filmstar Raj Kumar had once said that a lot clapping is made and a large crowd gathers even when some circus comes in the town," said Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary.
Ridiculing Modi's rally in Chennai, where he spoke on foreign policy issues, Chowdhary said: "He will come out in a Rambo style and shoot at everyone. That does not happen in foreign policy."
Modi, had on Friday, called UPA government's foreign policy "a mockery" and Delhi-centric. "India is not just Delhi. The foreign policy should be decided by the people and not by some politicians sitting in Delhi," he had said.
