Kanpur: The Congress on Monday again send feelers that it is looking for new allies in UP with party president Sonia Gandhi even willing to send her son to jail protesting against Chief Minister Mayawati.
""I think nothing can happen in Uttar Pradesh until our workers are ready to go to jail. Are all of you ready to go to jail? If need be Rahul will join you to go to jail," she said at the end of the party's two day conclave in Kanpur.
Sonia’s statement clearly demonstrates the new battlelines in UP. The message to Congress workers is to confront the BSP government and target Mayawati's dalit votebank.
A strategy reflected in Rahul Gandhi’s statement: "A man recently told me that only Indira Gandhi and Kanshi Ram were the saviour of dalits."
When the SP was ruling UP, the Congress had mocked it for claiming that there was rule of law and progress in the state. Now it has done a U-turn and is ready to ally with the SP.
SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav is unwilling to express any commitment to the Congress just yet. “There is no proposal for any alliance with the Congress,” he said on Monday.
