Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Thursday complained to the Election Commission that a 'systematic and concerted' campaign has been launched by the CPM to malign party supremo Mamata Banerjee when the poll process is on in West Bengal.

"CPM has only one job and that is to malign Mamata Banerjee and tarnish her image," All-India Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy said after meeting a full bench of the Election Commission in Kolkata.

Roy said, "We have complained to the EC full bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, in this regard."

An EC full bench arrived Kolkata on Thursday to review the last three phases of assembly elections and preparation for the remaining three phases. This is the third visit of an EC full bench in the state to oversee election preparedness for the six-phase polls.

Asked about the EC's query to the Trinamool Congress about the two bank transactions supposedly flouting RBI guidelines, Roy said it was neither a showcause notice nor an explanation. Trinamool Congress leader and Union Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi said that the party thanked the Election Commission for conducting a free and fair poll in the state so far.

"People in the state could vote fearlessly after 35 years, despite CPM's attempts at terrorising voters and the credit for this goes to the Election Commission."
