Forty nine candidates in the first phase of West Bengal polls have criminal cases pending against them.

Kolkata: Forty nine candidates in the first phase of assembly polls in West Bengal have criminal cases pending against them, while 143 have never filed I-T returns and 92 have not provided PAN details, according to an NGO.

Of the 49 candidates having criminal cases against them, 27 of them are accused in cases like murder, attempt to murder and extortion, West Bengal Election Watch (WBEW) state coordinator Biplab Halim said.

"10 are from Congress, 8 are from CPM, 8 from BJP and 4 from Trinamool Congress," he said.

Nine candidates are crorepatis and one belonging to RSP candidate has not filed the mandatory I-T details though his property is worth more than Rs 1 crore, he said.
