Delhi Elections: Parties go all out to woo Bihar, UP migrants
With the migrants numbering over 50 lakh, the politicians can't choose to ignore them during Delhi polls.

New Delhi: The bustling metropolis of Delhi has been ever expanding with the influx of migrants, who come from all across the country - to work or study here.

Around 47 per cent of the city's migrants come from Uttar Pradesh and over 31 per cent from Bihar.

Migrants from West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and other states have also settled down here in search of a better life.

With the migrants numbering over 50 lakh, the politicians can't choose to ignore them, especially with Assembly electiond just four weeks away.

With an approximate strength of 40 lakh, Poorvanchali voters hold the key to winning the Assembly elections. No wonder that all major political parties are doing all they can woo these voters from eastern UP and Bihar.

Poorvanchalis form near 1/3rd of the total voters in the city and it came as no surprise then that all the top Delhi BJP leaders like CM candidate Dr Harsh Vardhan, in-charge of Delhi elections Nitin Gadkari and state President Vijay Goel celebrated Chhath Puja at the Yamuna Ghat on Friday.

In fact giving the celebrations a political colour BJP's state unit President Vijay Goel said, "The Congress government has neglected Poorvanchalis and their cultural identity. Now, by asking some of the leaders to pay lip service regarding concerns of the Poorvanchali people, the Congress stands exposed. The BJP will declare Chhath Puja a public holiday, when elected to power."

Not only has the BJP promised to declare Chhath Puja a holiday, if voted to power, the party also promised to organise a fest celebrating the culture of Poorvanchal. The BJP also set up camps at all 72 ghats in the city for Chhath Puja to provide volunteer service to the people. The BJP has also given 4 tickets to Poorvanchalis.

The Congress is also not far behind and has decided to give tickets to Poorvanchali candidates in Delhi. In fact Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee's President JP Aggarwal has also gone to various ghats to participate in Chhath Puja's.

"We are concerned about migrants, one of our Members of Parliament Mahabl Mishra is a Poorvanchali. We also plan to give tickets to prominent Poorvanchali leaders," says party spokesperson Jitendra Kochar.

The Aam Aadmi Party is also not left behind in this race and one of its major support base are migrants living in unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters, which has been a strong-hold of the Congress. With the migrant voters expected to be the change makers in the upcoming Assembly elections, the parties are leaving no stones unturned to woo them.
