Dikshit slams BJP for making unbelievable promises to grab power
The Delhi Chief Minister accused BJP of playing with the emotions of people by making exaggerated claims.

New Delhi: Eyeing an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory in the upcoming assembly polls, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday accused BJP of making "unbelievable promises" to grab power. She reminded people of BJP's reign when the party had to change chief ministers three times in a span of five years which "severely" affected governance.

Addressing a rally at Rohini in North West Delhi, Dikshit slammed the BJP for trying to "mislead" the citizens and asked people to believe in what they see and not in false promises. "The earlier government had nothing to do with development and progress of the city. They changed three chief ministers during their regime of five years as they were all out to play with the sentiments of people. Today, they are making unbelievable promises. Their intention is to mislead people with an aim to harvest political gains," she said.

The Delhi BJP has announced that power tariff in the city will be slashed by 30 per cent if the party comes to power, besides promising to give flats to all the families residing in over 600 slums in the city. "During BJP's tenure from 1993 to 1998, what was the state of Delhi? There was no electricity for up to 10 hours, there was huge water scarcity. They played with the sentiments of people of the city then and they are trying to misguide you again," Dikshit said.

The BJP government between 1993 and 1998 saw three chief ministers, Madan Lal Khurana (1993-1996), Sahib Singh Verma (1996-1998) and Sushma Swaraj (1998). "Our government has been changing the face of Delhi. We have been taking decisions for welfare of the citizens without any political consideration whereas the main opposition party is coming out with exaggerated announcements," Dikshit said.

Asking people to believe in what is "visible" and not in false promises, the three-term chief minister said her government has ensured welfare of all sections of society in the last 14 years besides successfully changing the "face" of the city.

"Decide on the basis of what is visible. Believe in what you can see and what you can feel and not in the false promises made to you. You can feel and see the development we have carried out," Dikshit said. The Chief Minister said around 50,000 low cost flats will be distributed among the slum dwellers in next five months. The houses would be allotted to eligible registered urban poor families and residents of slum clusters.

About the ambitious food security scheme, Dikshit said government has completed all the ground work for the launch of the scheme on August 20, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She observed that large-scale distribution of highly subsidised food grains to eligible families under the scheme would not affect procurement price.
