For Civil Aviation Minister, Tezpur is in Bengal and Not Assam
The letter was in response to a request by Sarmah for starting regular flight on the Tezpur-Delhi sector and renaming the Tezpur airport.

Tezpur, the administrative headquarters of Sonitpur district in Assam, is in West Bengal, according to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju.

Raju made the faux pas in a letter written by him to Assam MP Ram Prasad Sarmah. The letter was in response to a request by Sarmah for starting regular flight on the Tezpur-Delhi sector and renaming the Tezpur airport.

"With regard to renaming the airport it is stated that as a general practice, the requests for naming/renaming of airports are considered based on the recommendations of the concerned State Government supported by a resolution passed by the respective State Legislative Assembly. Such proposals are then sent to the Union Cabinet for consideration and approval after due inter-ministerial consultations. However, no such proposal has been received from the State Government of West Bengal in this regard," Raju's letter read.
