Panaji: Results for the two Lok Sabha seats in Goa would be declared about three hours after counting of the approximately 550,000 votes begins on Saturday morning, the state's chief electoral officer (CEO) said on Friday.
Addressing a press conference at the state election commission office, CEO Ajit Srivastava said that the counting for the 40 assembly segments, which make up the North Goa and South Goa constituencies, would most likely be wound up in three to four phases of counting, which begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
"The first trends will start coming in within one hour of counting process (beginning)," he said.
Srivastava said the counting staff had been asked to report to the respective counting centres in North and South Goa by 5 a.m., which would be followed by a randomizing process, where the personnel would be shuffled about.
"The entire process will be videographed," Srivastava said.
Two-term MP and former central government minister Shripad Naik (Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)) and Jitendra Deshprabhu (NCP) are regarded as the main contenders for the North Goa seat, while sitting MP Francisco Sardinha (Congress) and first-time contestant Narendra Savoikar (BJP) are the main candidates for the South Goa seat.
Goa's Congress unit chief Subhash Shirodkar said that the Congress would win the South Goa seat by 40,000 votes and the North Goa seat by 10,000 votes. Leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar has also expressed confidence that the BJP would win both the seats, but refused to divulge the expected margin of victory.
