Government rejects CBI's concerns on Lokpal Bill

New Delhi: The government has turned down the Central Bureau of Investigation's concerns over the provisions of the Lokpal Bill. It has told the CBI that it must wait till the institution of Lokpal becomes functional and not tinker with the Act.

The government has said that the Select Committee has shaped the provisions only after repeated consultations with all stakeholders including the CBI. The government has told the CBI that the matter has been debated at length in Parliament.

It said that if required, the matter may require amendments in Act by Parliament.

The CBI had rejected the Lokpal Bill saying the Lokpal should not give it directions to probe cases. The CBI also asked that if the Lokpal and CVC both refer a case to CBI with directions, who does CBI listen to.

"CBI submits its investigation report to designated court with a copy to Lokpal. But Lokpal has powers to sanction chargesheet or closure. So what happens to CBI report submitted in designated court," the investigative agency has asked.
