Govt broke consensus on foreign policy: Mulayam
India's neighbours are not its friends, says SP chief.

New Delhi: Former defence minister and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday slammed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for "lack of will power, resolution and dedication" in its foreign policy.

"These are absent in the government," said Yadav in the Lok Sabha during discussion on the recent India-Pakistan joint statement.

The Samajwadi Party leader criticised the government for initiating a dialogue with Pakistan, "a state which failed to initiate action against the perpetrators of the terrorist attack".

"You should not have a dialogue with Pakistan. Why did you initiate a dialogue with Pakistan? Pakistan has actually benefited," said Yadav, whose party supports the government.

He said there were lapses in India's policy towards Iran and added: "The neighbouring nations are not friendly with India."

Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav said there was no coordination among the ministers with regard to the country's policy towards Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

He said: "India's foreign policy suffers as the government had failed to evolve consensus on it with the opposition parties."

"This tradition has been broken," he said.
