New Delhi: Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to assume office in the North Block on Thursday after the Cabinet meeting.

Sources said though Singh has already held meetings with Home Ministry officials, he will formally take charge of the ministry Thursday.

Singh has already attended meetings of the Union Cabinet and took a briefing from the Home Secretary on Tuesday on certain important issues pertaining to the Home Ministry and will see a presentation of his Ministry on Thursday.

"I have asked him to prepare a detailed presentation," he had tweeted.

62-year-old Singh, who was elected from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, will succeed Sushil Kumar Shinde in the crucial Ministry that handles country's internal security and the task of guarding the international border with Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

The immediate issues that the teacher-turned politician will have to deal with include tackling the Naxal violence, activities of terrorist outfits in country's hinterland, infiltration from Pakistan, illegal immigration from Bangladesh and strengthening intelligence gathering mechanism.

As Home Minister, the two-term BJP president will be part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Security, the country's highest decision making body on security matters.
