Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan’s son, Abdullah Azam, who is serving a seven-year jail term in two fake birth certificate cases, claimed before the MP/MLA court in Rampur on Wednesday that Hardoi jail administration was forcing him to “sleep on moist floor and providing cold water for bath despite freezing conditions.”
“It is becoming difficult to bear all this,” the ex-MLA of Suar said.
The court asked for a report from the jail administration on the issue and directed them to provide Khan with “facilities as per the jail manual”.
Superintendent (prisons) of Hardoi district jail, Satish Chandra Tripathi, on Thursday, denied Abdullah’s allegations calling them “baseless”, TOI reported
“The floor on which about 1,200 inmates sleep is made of plaster and a carpet is laid on it. Every inmate is provided with three blankets and they use them to save themselves from cold. We’re providing a fresh tubewell water supply for taking a bath during the day. The facilities are all provided as per the jail manual and they can be inspected anytime. We’ll provide our report to the Rampur court with the details,” Satish Chandra Tripathi was quoted by TOI as saying.
Abdullah Azam and his parents were convicted for submitting fake date of birth certificates and were sentenced to a seven-year jail term on October 18, 2023. Abdullah was later moved to Hardoi district jail while Azam was shifted to Sitapur jail, citing “security reasons”.
