Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will provide protection to the Palghar girl, who was arrested for a Facebook post on late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, and her family. While the Prithviraj Chavan government is claiming of providing security to them, the girl and her family have shifted to Gujarat. Fearing a backlash by the Shiv Sena, they are not ready to come back to Maharashtra.
The girl from Palghar in Thane district of Maharashtra, who was arrested for a Facebook post on the bandh-like situation in Mumbai following the death of Bal Thackeray, had fled from the state along with her family a few days ago and gone to her native place in Gujarat. According to the girl's neighbour Purushottam Bhanushali the family was last seen on November 28 and the house has been locked since 29.
While Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil said that they should have not left the state as his government would provide them security. But the girl's family says that she will only return if the situation improves.
Meanwhile, several youngsters protested against the move to silence the girl in Pune on Monday. They were protesting against the misuse of Section 66-A of the IT Act.
The 21-year-old girl was arrested for the Facebook post after a Shiv Sena leader complained against her. Her friend was also arrested for liking the post. Some Shiv Sena activists had allegedly ransacked her uncle's nursing home after the post.
While the police were prompt in arresting the two girls, which led to a huge uproar in the country, the people who had ransacked the nursing home were let off easily. The two girls had even apologised for their post, fearing that the Shiv Sena would harm their family members.
After a report by the Konkan IG, two police officers were suspended. Even the judge, Ramchandra Bagade, who had granted bail to the two girls, was suspended. The Shiv Sena had, however, warned that comments or posts against Bal Thackeray could lead to tension and trouble in Maharashtra.
