The BJP, with the video, has tried to send a message that leaders in the opposition alliance consider themselves contenders with no consensus on one common face to lead the fight against PM Modi.

Sharing a video titled ‘INDI Alliance Mein Fight, Main Hi Dulha Hun Right,’ the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a jibe at the Opposition bloc’s ‘infighting’ over a common face for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024.

The party released the 2.23-minute-long video on its X handle on Tuesday, March 26. The clip shows a fictitious situation where prominent leaders of the INDIA bloc have gathered for a meeting regarding marriage, with a woman dressed as a bride.

Seated in the centre is Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who leads the conversation about marriage with the woman dressed as a bride. She seems perplexed by so many contenders.

The BJP, with the video, has tried to send a message that leaders in the opposition alliance consider themselves contenders with no consensus on one common face to lead the fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP in the upcoming elections.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi, other leaders depicted in the clip include Sonia Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and his father Lalu Prasad Yadav.

“Do you think they can select a groom? How can they choose a prime minister? Abki baar 400 paar,” the video says towards the end.

Congress’ Reaction

Reacting to the video, the Congress hit back at the BJP and attacked it for looking at the institution of marriage with ‘conservative eyes’ and reducing women to stereotypes.

Calling the advertisement “obscene”, Congress national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate stated there is a difference between finding a groom and choosing a representative in a democracy, suggesting that BJP failed to grasp the concept of autonomy.

In what seemed like a veiled dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shrinate added, “…anyone can become the groom – it is important to uphold the principles of marriage.”

“The institution of marriage is very sacred. This is a relationship based on mutual trust and love, which despite not being of blood, is stronger than that and is the foundation of all other relationships in life. Today, an obscene advertisement from the BJP has once again made it clear that in their conservative eyes. A woman’s existence is to wear a lehenga, become a bride and impress a groom. But there is a difference between finding a groom and choosing your representative in a democracy. Well, anyone can become the groom – it is important to uphold the principles of marriage,” she said in a post on X in Hindi.
