New Delhi: A day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's controversial virus remark,
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) approached Election Commission seeking action against BJP-NDA leaders including Adityanath.
IUML delegation led by national secretary Khorrum A Omer and Advocate Haris Beeran filed a complaint to EC demanding FIR for Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation. The complaint says Adityanath's 'virus' remark is loathsome allegation having no historical backing and an FIR be registered under IPC 153A.
IUML also demands FIR against SAD MLA MS Sirsa for his tweets alleging Pakistan connection to IUML flag.
IUML in its complaint also requested EC to initiate punitive measures including disabling of social media accounts of Yogi Adityanath, MS Sirsa, Shefali Vaidya, Koena Mitra, Giriraj Singh, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya for making 'baseless, malicious' allegations. Tweets and comments from about two dozen handles, which intend to create communal hatred, against IUML are annexed in the complaint.
The complaint says "IUML is committed to the Constitutional values of secularism and democracy. Yogi Adityanath has called IUML a virus responsible for the partition of India. The IUML was formed in Madras on March 10, 1948 after the tragic partition of India. The party is committed to the Constitution of India and the Constitutional principles of secularism, fraternity and the unity and integrity of the nation. The IUML has no role in the partition. This has been done intentionally for creating hatred among communities which is punishable under section 153A of the IPC."
IUML also mentions the campaign using its flag in the complaint. "Party flag has wrongly been portrayed as the national flag of Pakistan. The IUML flag has nothing to do with the national flag of Pakistan. Apart from IUML, many political parties have green flags in India including Janta Dal(U), Janta Dal(S), Indian National Lok Dallas, Rashtriya Janta Dal among others. The propaganda to divide the people into communal lines and appeal to the people to act on those lines are a clear violation of Model Code of Conduct," alleges IUML.
Omer said through these statements party persons of BJP sought to mislead the people by referring to the IUML as All India Muslim League, which was completely different party altogether and was dissolved as a political party right after the tragic partition of India. All India Muslim League was a party before the independence of which Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a member which now cease to exist.
The row over IUML was started after Congress President Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Wayanad constituency in Kerala. Since then BJP started the campaign in national level to gain majority votes, especially in Northern India projecting Muslim League connection.
"This is a deliberate effort to divide people in communal line which is completely against election rules," said Advocate Haris Beeran.
IUML MP PK Kunhalikutty said Muslim League is not the virus but anti-virus which always stood for secular politics.
IUML is very active in Wayanad constituency where Rahul Gandhi contesting. It has 18 MLAs from Kerala, one MLA from Tamil Nadu and 3 MPs including hundereds of elected members in local bodies.
The party had presence in Parliament from 1952. IUML is in alliance with Congress in Kerala since 1969. Member of IUML CH Muhammad Koya was also the Chief Minister of Kerala in 1978. The party was formed in Madras on March 10, 1948 after partition. One of the founding member Quaid E-Millath Muhammad Ismail was also a member of the Constituent Assembly.
The present complaint and counter-campaign by IUML in national level are aimed to give Congress a narrative to counter BJP in North India which is stepping up attack against IUML.
