New Delhi: Former Samajwadi Party leader and Rashtriya Lok Manch Party chief Amar Singh has said that the Congress wouldn't have been accused of resorting to political gimmicks if it had introduced the minority quota before the election season.
"I feel Salman Khurshid should have announced reservations for backward Muslims long back. Then all this talk of election stunts would not have started by the Opposition. Neither would have the Election Commission sent him the notice. Also, he should declare all reservation related promises as suggested by Ranganath Mishra Commission report and Sachar committee. Why in installments? He should not express love in installments," said Amar Singh.
Salman Khurshid has promised that the Muslim sub-quota will be increased from 4.5 per cent to 9 per cent, if the Congress is voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notice to union Law Minister Salman Khurshid on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he violated the model code of conduct by announcing 9 per cent sub-quota for Muslims if the party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission has asked Khurshid to reply in writing by 5 pm on Thursday.
