Kolkata: A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)has moved the Supreme Court on Monday seeking a change in West Bengal panchayat poll dates, arguing that the elections will take place during the month of Ramzan.

A hearing is expected in the apex court on Tuesday, which will also be attended by the state election commissioner. Sources said that the State Elelction Commission (SEC) has put on hold all necessary election formalities and cancelled all meetings with political parties and state police.

The panchayat polls are scheduled to be held between July 11 and 25.

The ruling Trinamool Congress and the Congress will also move the Supreme Court on Monday for an amending order to defer the elections as the Muslim holy month begins in the second week of July.

"We will approach the Supreme Court on Monday seeking an order that the panchayat polls should not be held during Ramadan," Trinamool Congress leader Sultan Ahmed said. Ahmed added that the state government will support the move.

Following a prolonged legal tussle between the SEC and Banerjee's regime, an apex court bench had ordered the polls to be held on July 11, 15, 19, 22 and 25. Earlier in the day, several Muslim organisations held a protest rally in the city and submitted a memorandum to the SEC demanding that the polls should not be held during Ramadan. The organisations have also threatened to take legal recourse if their demand was not met.
