New Delhi: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda turned 85 on Friday and relief from the Supreme Court could not have come at a better time. As birthday greetings rolled in for the octogenarian, the Supreme Court decided that the floor test in Karnataka would be held on Saturday, instead of 15 days later.
Putting an end to the tussle for power in Karnataka, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court has ordered that a floor test be conducted in Karnataka Assembly at 4pm on Saturday.
The Supreme Court has now ordered that the Pro tem speaker will conduct the floor test and the Speaker’s discretion will prevail. However, the Congress-JD(S) combine is not in the clear yet. On Friday, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala appointed KG Bopaiah of the BJP as the pro tem speaker instead of RV Deshpande of the Congress, the senior-most member of the House.
Wishing the JD(S) patriarch on his birthday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I would like to wish Shri HD Deve Gowda ji a very happy birthday and pray for his good health and happiness.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted on the former PM’s birthday, saying, “Spoke to our former Prime Minister Shri HD Deve Gowda Ji and conveyed birthday wishes to him. I pray for his good health and long life.”
