New Delhi: A statue of Periyar E V Ramasamy was found desecrated in Coimbatore following which a Hindu Makkal Katchi loyalist was arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident.
A flag of Dravida Kazhagam was found burnt and the rope tied as noose was seen around the neck of the life-size statue of 'Periyar' in Puliyakulam, to appear as if it was hanged.
Besides, the spectacle on the statue was kept on the forehead, police said. As the news spread, police rushed to the spot and removed the burnt remains of the flag and the noose.
A man called Tirumurugan, a Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) loyalist, was arrested, police added.
Adequate security has been provided to other statues of Periyar and also other leaders in and around the city, police said.
Another statue of the rationalist leader had been desecrated at the temple town of Srirangam in the first week of December, leading to state-wide protests and violence.
