Mumbai: Two days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned, President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday cleared the imposition of the President's Rule in the poll-bound state.
The Union Cabinet met under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and recommended President Rule for Maharashtra.
Chavan resigned from his chief minister's post following the end of 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance in the state. His resignation was accepted by Governor C Vidyasagar Rao on Saturday.
The Nationalist Congress Party decided to terminate the 15-year-old alliance with Congress as talks between the two parties for seat-sharing ahead of the October 15 Assembly polls failed.
