Sadhvi on Fast in Jail, Seeks Immediate Release to Attend Kumbh

Days after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) gave a clean chit to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, she has started a fast unto death demanding her immediate release from the prison. Sadhvi, who has been in jail since October 2008, is demanding her release so that she can attend the ongoing Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain.

A court in Dewas in Madhya Pradesh has directed local police to make arrangements for Sadhvi's participation in the Kumbh. The court has directed the police to ensure a holy dip and Mahakal Darshan for the Sadhvi before May 21.

Sadhvi and six others are almost certain to walk free in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case with the NIA chargesheet dropping the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) charges against all the accused. However, Army officer Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Srikant Purohit still faces other charges that include murder and attempt to murder.

Twelve persons, including the Sadhvi and Purohit, were arrested for carrying out a blast at Malegaon, a predominantly Muslim town in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008, killing six persons and injuring over 100.
