Chennai: Tamil Nadu police went into a tizzy following phone calls and an email about bomb threats at three places since Wednesday evening, including the residence of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai where a BJP conference was on.
Searches were carried out at the Chief Minister's Poes Garden residence on Thursday, Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur last night following the threat, police sources said.
Following the search at the Chief Minister's residence, they said the threat through an email turned out to be a hoax.
Police sources in Madurai said a search was conducted at the Meenakshi Temple last night after a caller had claimed a bomb would go off when the BJP conference was on.
Security has been beefed up in Madurai where the two-day BJP state-level conference was in progress in which senior leaders, including LK Advani, are slated to attend.
Police also conducted a thorough search at Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur near Virudhunagar late last night following a bomb threat. But the threat turned out to be a hoax, police sources said.
"The objective of the caller could be just to create a scare. But the police did not want to take a chance," they said.
Today's bomb threat comes close on the heels of a similar threat to the CBI office here on Wednesday, which turned out a hoax.
