Mumbai: Hitting out at the Opposition for stalling Legislative Council proceedings over the issue of waiving off farmers' loans, Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray today said the demands of rival parties sound hollow as they did nothing for farmers when in power.
"You were in power for the last 15 years. Why did you not waive off farmers loans then? Why this drama now? These demands sound hollow when you did nothing in past 15 years," Thackeray told reporters here.
He said Sena did not need to take lessons from the Opposition on running the government and added that it had been raising farmers issue since the time they were in opposition.
"Do not teach us how to run the government. If loans cannot be waived off, farmers should be made free from all kinds of debts. We have been pressing for this demand from the time we were in opposition. The Opposition should behave like an Opposition," he said.
Thackeray had recently said in Nashik that the condition of farmers is getting from bad to worst with each passing day and the government should ensure that farmers are made free from all kinds of debts.
Opposition parties have been forcing the adjourning of the Upper House for last three days over the issue of waiving off farmers' loans. They also demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis take back his words that loans cannot be waived off and then start a discussion.
