UP House meets for 'farewell session'
The Mulayam Singh Govt has called a farewell session of the outgoing Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday.

New Delhi: With just 48 hours left for the counting of votes to begin in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Mulayam Singh Government has called a farewell session of the outgoing Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday.

The session will be held in Rampur, Principal Secretary (Assembly) RP Pandey said in Lucknow. The BSP and Congress members, however, are likely to abstain from the session.

Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav will deliver a farewell speech to the House along with the Leader of the Opposition, Lalji Tandon.

It is likely that the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government will seek the passage of a new Bill during the daylong session to provide minority status to the controversial Maulana Mohammad Ali Jahaur Private University at Rampur. UP Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan is a life-time pro-chancellor of the university.

Earlier, the Bill had been sent for Presidential reference by State Governor TV Rajeswar for setting up the university under the government sector. Government sources, however, said it is also possible that the government will withdraw the Bill.

In case the Bill comes up, the government will bring in an amendment in the Bill through a three-fourth majority of the House for the de-recognisation of the university with an approval from the University Grants Commission.

Several of the 403 members of the House are in fray in the ongoing UP elections and their fate is going to be decided on Friday.
