Dehradun/New Delhi: The political crisis in Uttarakhand escalated on Saturday after Uttarakhand Governor reportedly asked Chief Minister Harish Rawat to prove majority in the state Assembly by March 28.
The development came after Rawat expelled one of the rebels MLAs Harak Singh Rawat from the party.
With the BJP - claiming the support of rebel Congress MLAs - stepping up efforts to oust the Congress government in Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat claimed that he is ready to prove his majority in the Assembly.
"Those who are saying they have support of 35 MLAs are misrepresenting facts. I am confident that I still have a majority in the Assembly and can prove it on the floor of the House," he said after having a meeting with Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal.
The Chief Minister warned of action against the rebel Congress leaders if they don't accept their mistakes.
His warning came after 28 BJP MLAs, along with 10 Congress rebels, arrived in the national capital to meet the BJP top brass, including party president Amit Shah.
The 10 Congress rebels include former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, Harak Singh Rawat, Pradeep Batra, Shailendra Singhal, Umesh Chandra Kau, Subodh Uniyal, Shaila Rani Rawat, Amrita Rawat and Kunwar Pranav.
Congress chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala Surjewala said, "Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are infamous for forcible eviction of elected governments in this country. Elected government are being destabilised by a sinister conspiracy. After Arunachal Pradesh, it is Uttarakhand".
Meanwhile, BJP claimed that it has majority in Uttarakhand Assembly and should be invited to form the government as the incumbent Congress dispensation has been reduced to a minority.
"The BJP has the numbers with the support of rebel Congress MLAs to form a new government in Uttarakhand," Shyam Jaju, the state in-charge of BJP, told PTI.
Jaju said the party is willing to present the MLAs whose support it enjoys before President Pranab Mukherjee and insisted that Rawat should immediately resign given the loss of majority.
