New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has conveyed to the allies, the decision of the Congress core group meeting that the ordinance on convicted leaders will be withdrawn.
The decision comes after Congress vice President Rahul Gandhi has publicly raised his opposition against the ordinance and called it 'nonsense' which should be 'torn up and thrown away.'
Here is how the politicians from various parties have reacted to the decision:
Arun Jaitley, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha: It would have been a great day for democracy if the ordinance was withdrawn because of constitutionality or morality. If this ordinance is withdrawn today it is because dynasty prevails over constitutionality.
Nitish Kumar, Bihar Chief Minister: There is nothing wrong if the ordinance is withdrawn, if a mistake is being rectified what is wrong in that.
Akhilesh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister: Party will decide on the ordinance but if somebody is in a hurry then i think the hurry is because of the upcoming elections. As elections are nearing, the Congress seems to be in a hurry to take such steps
Parkash Singh Badal, Punjab Chief Minister: Look at the situation, government passes it and then their young star creates a drama trying to show that it has been done aganist his wishes. I have objection to the language. This is an insult for the PM and the Cabinet both
Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena leader: Rahul Gandhi looks at himself as a remote control. He has put the Prime Minister in the dock, made him out to be an accused. Rahul is not above Parliament. We are opposed to the ordinance but when the bill comes up in the standing committee we want some amendments to make sure that people facing cases in the course of political movements are not made victims.
Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) leader: Glad that the ordinance is being withdrawn, it will have to be withdrawn. It shouldn't have come in the first place. There was no hurry. This is completely wrong.
Jyotiradityya Scindia, Union Minister for Power: I think Rahul Gandhi is trying to bring clean up Indian politics, to make it more open and remove corruption. With that in mind he's given his opinion .
Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy: I was present in the Cabinet meeting when it was taken up, it was approved by top of the Congress. Rahul should have put his views before the PM, it was wrong he said in his absence. We are all allies, Hope that there will be better coordination with allies in future. It's unfortunate.
D Raja, CPI: We are a democracy. In a democratic polity, the government must deal with an open mind.
Manish Tewari, Congress leader and Union Minister: The UPA government is sensitive to public opinion and is open and willing to reconsider its decisions based on opinions of others.
