Yogi Adityanath Govt Sets Up Panel on Quota for Backwards, MBCs
The four-member committee will probe if the backwards and MBCs are getting reservation in proportion to their numbers. The panel will be known as ‘Uttar Pradesh Pichda Varg Samajik Nyay Samiti’.

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government in UP has set up a committee to review quota for backward and Most Backward Castes (MBC) in the state ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The four-member committee will probe if the backwards and MBCs are getting reservation in proportion to their numbers. The panel will be known as ‘Uttar Pradesh Pichda Varg Samajik Nyay Samiti’.

The committee set up by the government will have two months’ time to compile their report. It will comprise retired judge Raghvendra Kumar, former bureaucrat JP Vishwakarma, professor in Economics at BHU Bhupendra Singh, and senior advocate Ashok Rajbhar.

Speaking to News18, a senior government official on the condition of anonymity said, “Till now only select backward castes were actually enjoying full benefits of 27% reservation to OBCs. For instance, the Yadavs were getting the maximum benefit of reservation, but then there are several MBCs like Rajbhars who aren’t getting quota benefits to the fullest. There are others too like Ghosi, Kamboj, Darzi, and Bind who too aren’t benefiting as much. Hence, a review is needed in this regard.”

As per information, currently there are more than 60 such backward castes that are not getting reservation benefits as per their total numbers. In the year 2002, Rajnath Singh who was the Chief Minister of the state then, had attempted a quota within quota for most backwards and dalits, but the proposal couldn’t materialise anyhow.

However, many political pundits believe that this move by the Yogi government is an attempt to rattle the main opposition — Samajwadi Party, which enjoys the support of OBCs, mainly Yadavs.

Speaking to News18, Samajwadi Party spokesperson and MLC, Sunil Singh Sajan said, “This is an attempt to end quota reservation in disguise. Our party president has also demanded that reservation should be given to everyone and government should get a census done and based on the numbers of the caste, reservation should be given. But the BJP is not ready to get the census done for the reasons better known to them. This step of the government will further weaken the reservation for the backwards and the MBCs.”
