Haryana boxer Chandni Mehra overcame Madhya Pradesh’s Muskan Srivastava via a unanimous decision to win the WBC India National Super Featherweight title.

The eight-round encounter went all the way with both fighters giving everything they had, knowing that the national title and WBC Asia ranking were at stake.

Chandni got the ball rolling by landing several heavy punches in the opening rounds, which left Muskan wobbling.

The 21-year-old Chandni displayed her trademark aggression all through the bout, while Muskan, to her credit, maintained her composure in the face of unrelenting pressure but came off second best.

“I have been training very hard for this for the last few years. My mother has ensured that I stay focused and in control of my destiny. I am so grateful to her for keeping me grounded. She has sacrificed a lot for me. She couldn’t come for the bout, but my coach Rakesh Bawa is here and I want to thank him,” Chandni said in a release.

This win comes on the heels of a ‘split draw’ decision in Sydney last month.

“I was robbed of victory over an Australian when I fought Down Under last month. The crowds in the arena knew who won. My opponent was also surprised (that it was a split draw). She even switched off her social media accounts fearing a backlash from the (boxing) community. The promoters haven’t even uploaded the videos,” added Chandni.

“I am glad that phase is past me, but I just had to win big tonight.” Chandni’s win should earn her a ranking with WBC Asia.
