Meta Not Ready To Compete With Apple’s Vision Pro Headset: What It Plans To Do Next
Meta has a wide range of wearables like the Quest series and the Ray Ban smart glasses but does it need a product that costs over a lakh?

Meta seems to be backtracking on its plans to rival Apple in the premium headset market. The company had signed up with LG to make the Vision Pro alternative in the next few years, but those plans have been halted by Meta in favour of something cheaper and more up its alley.

The details about the update come via a report by The Information which says Meta has asked the team to stop working on the premium device as it intensifies its focus on the popular Quest series and the Ray Ban smart glasses.

Meta was planning for a 2027 launch for the rumoured Quest Pro headset but it does feel like the right move going by Apple’s struggle to see its $3,499 (Rs 2.90 lakh approx) priced Vision Pro headset since its launch earlier this year. The Quest headsets come for a reasonable $499.99 (Rs 40,00 approx) which makes it more accessible and manageable for consumers.

Meta’s deal with LG was purported to help the company get the displays for the headset similar to the Vision Pro and also the advanced mixed reality tech running on Meta’s Horizon platform customised for the premium headgear. Companies need products like the Vision Pro to show their ambitions but they also need the product to be a market fit with people happy to pay the big bucks for such devices that are still catering to a niche audience.

Meta’s Zuckerberg has talked about the impact of Apple’s headset in the XR market but it feels that he is happy to retain the interest without actually blowing all the money on a product that might never become a best-seller for the company.
