Twitter updates its search interface; now offers more ways to filter tweets
The new search interface lets you sort results by top tweets, live tweets, accounts, photos, videos, news, and more.

New Delhi: In tune with its continuous efforts at improving user experience at its site, Twitter has rolled out a new search interface for the web version of its microblogging platform that sports a cleaner look and offers more options to filter tweets.

The new search interface, earlier in testing mode, lets you sort results by top tweets, live tweets, accounts, photos, videos, news, and more.

A report on TechCrunch notes that the latest update of Twitter’s search engine is aimed at making the search interface easy to use in terms of switching between tweets, accounts, photos, and videos.

Recently, Twitter overhauled its landing page to attract logged-out visitors and convert them into new users. It has also introduced a number of new features, including 'instant timeline’ and ‘while you were away,’ in a bid to hold user interest in the 140-character microblog. A tweaked Direct Message setting now lets you message anyone on Twitter, irrespective of the following status.

The redesigned search interface of Twitter.com now shows a notable tweet on the top (one that has been retweeted or favourited for a number of times), followed by other top account results, photos, or tweet results.

However, not each time the top result will be the most favourited result as the search engine can also show results that better match with what Twitter believes is the searcher’s intent. For example, a search for ‘Steve Jobs’ shows photos of the latest movie based on the legendary Apple co-founder. While a search for ‘Potus’ results in US President Barack Obama’s official tweet.

The ‘Live’ tweet section lists the most recent results using the keyword. The new interface also lets you save or embed the search from the ‘more options’ tab. This is particularly useful while tracking posts of live nature, for example an online contest or live match, where you can easily locate all the top results at one go. The ‘advanced search’ feature further offers more options to filter tweets.

As the interface is currently only available for the web version, we would like to see if the 140-character microblogging site plans to optimize it for the mobile version as well.
