Questions were raised about humanity when an accident victim saw his money being looted by bystanders before succumbing to death on the road. The disturbing incident unfolded on the Delhi-Agra national highway in January this year. A truck driver, who was allegedly drunk at that moment, lost control and collided with around 20 vehicles. The mishap took the lives of three individuals.
The 46-year-old milk trader, identified as Dharmendra, was coming back to his home from Mathura, riding a motorcycle. Following the collision with the speeding truck, Dharmendra collapsed on the road. He was carrying a bag full of cash and the amount was said to be almost Rs 1.5 lakh. As he sustained severe injuries, the man was unable to get on his feet. In a widely viral video, several people were seen gathering around Dharmendra at the site of the accident.

Despite helping the victim, the people were seen debating on the money scattered on the road. Some of the onlookers advised the others to hand the cash to the police. That’s when an opportunistic individual was heard saying, “Utha lo, paisa utha lo (Take the money).”
When Dharmendra didn’t show up at home that night, his family sought assistance from the local police. According to his brother Mahendra, they were informed that Dharmendra had been rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. His family members also found the bag at the accident site but failed to retrieve the cash.
“When Dharmendra did not return home we went searching for him and found his damaged bike. His bag was lying open nearby, but there was no money in it. His wallet was also missing,” Mahendra said, as quoted by Times of India. He further slammed the bystanders, saying, “It would have been acceptable if the people who took the money also helped him get treatment.”
The video caught the attention of the police and an FIR was registered on the basis of the complaint moved by his family. Speaking about the topic, DCP Suraj Kumar Rai said that they had also taken cognisance of the video. More than three months have passed and no further details are available about the bystanders.
