For the past two years, Zhang Dingjie and his wife Wang Beilei have been pursuing justice for their son, Zhang Kuan. Tragically, on November 9, 2021, the 11-year-old ended his own life by jumping off the roof of a 24-floor building opposite his primary school in eastern China’s Jiangxi province.
Former traffic police officer Zhang Dingji, as reported by the South China Morning Post, left his job to seek justice for his son, Zhang Kuan. Personally handling his son’s case, he aims for the harshest punishment for the responsible teacher.
Before the child took his own life, he wrote a note saying, “My death has nothing to do with my parents, society, or the country. The only reason for this is Zou, who was troubling me.” The child’s class teacher, Xu Zhang, was the one causing problems.
After the child passed away, the parents checked the school’s cameras and found that Xu had treated the child badly that day. Xu accused the child of lying, made fun of them for a torn notebook page and even provoked the child by saying, “Go and jump,” when he seemed upset.
Before the tragic incident, Zou accused Zhang of lying, claiming he hadn’t submitted a test paper that he never received. The teacher also embarrassed the youngster by asking about his financial situation due to a torn page in his notebook.
Zhang’s father noticed his son getting upset and staring at the tall building outside the classroom window. The grieving parent reported that Zou had repeatedly suggested that her students should just “jump off the building across from the school,” an accusation Zou has refuted.
After gathering evidence, the father acted as a lawyer to sue the teacher. Zou, who lost her teaching job two months after the boy’s death, was found not guilty in the first trial in August 2023. Unfortunately, technical issues prevented the display of surveillance video evidence during the hearing.
Zhang senior brought the teacher back to court in November of last year and is awaiting a verdict. Since becoming a lawyer, the father has been providing legal assistance to other parents who have faced similar situations, earning praise on mainland social media.
His wife, a psychological counsellor, has provided free services to nearly 100 families facing similar challenges. The couple stated, “Since our son’s death, protecting all the other children like him has become our mission.”
