It is surprising how mishandling luggage, particularly fragile items, has become a norm among airport staff. Recently, a shocking video showcasing the rough handling of a passenger’s “fragile” belongings by ground staff of Air India surfaced online. The passenger himself captured the video through the plane’s window. The Mumbai-based Guitarist and Sound Engineer expressed disappointment by posting the video on Instagram.
The footage captures a staff member tossing the musical instrument onto the luggage carrier. This careless act has sparked widespread concern about luggage safety, intensifying frustrations among passengers who’ve faced similar incidents. Social media users are now condemning airlines for their negligence, urging for greater accountability and respect for passengers’ belongings.
In the footage, two ground staff members are seen picking up the musical instrument before casually throwing it into the luggage truck. Despite the visible fragile sticker on the instrument, the individual handling the luggage overlooks the instructions. Tagging Air India and Ratan Tata, the man asked, “Is this the way you handle fragile item?” He added, “Please spread this video my friends and question the Air India Authorities.”
While numerous social media users criticized Air India for neglecting the instructions, one user-provided details on why ground staff handle luggage with such carelessness.
A user wrote, “Dear friends, I worked in this industry for two years. The amount of labour work required here is insane. There is no shade or anything in the runway and mostly these loaders are paid very little money by handling agencies. Each flight has close to 250 – 300 bags weighing close to 12 kg average. They do 10-12 flights a day. So if you have something super precious there are services which transport your stuff safely but on a higher price. If u don’t want to pay those charges for fragile courier or cargo please don’t cry about this.”
Another shared, “All airlines do the same thing. No exception. Sad reality.”
An individual noted, “It even has the ‘fragile’ sticker which is visible from here. This is messed up. I hope you shared this on Twitter too.”
“This is why I have anger issues,” a comment read.
Another wrote, “They will throw harder when the handle safe sticker are they that’s their mind of the employee.”
The video has garnered over 3 million views. What are your views on this?
