Jamaipura: The UP Village Where Men Live With Their In-laws

In Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, there exists a peculiar village known as Jamaipura, renowned for its unique tradition of sons-in-law residing with their in-laws after marriage. The custom, steeped in ancient tradition, dictates that the son-in-law, referred to as ‘Jamai,’ moves into his wife’s parental home upon marriage.

Jamaipura, located within Khekra city, Baghpat, traces its origins back 37 years ago when four families, having married daughters from Khekra town, settled in this area. Initially dubbed ‘Jamai Pur,’ the colony gradually garnered the moniker ‘Jamaipura,’ as the local populace recognised its inhabitants as ‘Jamais.’ Over time, the colony flourished, now accommodating approximately 500 families.

Despite its evolution, the colony retains its historical significance, upholding the enduring tradition of son-in-laws residing with their in-laws. Liaquat Ansari, the current councillor, affirmed the colony’s establishment in 1987, highlighting the trend of sons marrying daughters from Jamaipura families and subsequently residing with their in-laws. Although the colony’s name was later changed to Prempuri, ‘Jamaipura’ remains entrenched in local parlance, indicative of its cultural legacy.

Meanwhile, in Unakoti, Tripura, another intriguing facet of Indian culture unfolds, with local legends attributing the region’s misfortunes to a curse by Shiva. Despite its purported curse, Unakoti boasts an abundance of archaeological treasures, including ancient temple ruins and hundreds of rock-cut sculptures. Believed to number one less than a crore, these uncut rock statues remain largely unexplored, shrouded in mystery.

The enigmatic allure of Unakoti beckons archaeologists and enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into India’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Yet, amidst its unexplored wonders, the curse of Shiva casts a shadow over Unakoti’s legacy, adding an air of mystique to its ancient landscape.
