Unlike the more populated remote areas of the world, Monowi is an exceptional case where only one woman resides.

In most places, even the smallest villages are home to numerous families, with populations typically ranging from 100 to 150 people. However, there is one extraordinary village that defies this norm: Monowi in Nebraska, USA, which boasts a population of just one person.

Unlike the more populated remote areas of the world, Monowi is an exceptional case where only one woman resides. Elsie Eiler, the sole inhabitant, has lived alone in the village for many years. Despite her advanced age, she manages all aspects of the village’s operations, from administrative duties to daily upkeep. Her life in this uniquely isolated community offers a glimpse into a singular lifestyle that is truly unmatched.

Monowi holds the title of the world’s smallest village. As recorded in the 2010 census, it is home to just one resident: Elsie Eiler. By the 2020 census, Elsie was 86 years old. Living alone in Monowi since 2004, Elsie manages all village responsibilities herself, including roles as mayor, bartender, and librarian.

Spanning approximately 54 hectares, Monowi was once a bustling community. By 1930, the village was home to 123 residents. However, over the decades, the population dwindled. By 1980, only 18 people remained, and by the year 2000, Elsie Eiler and her husband Rudy were the last inhabitants.

Following Rudy’s passing in 2004, Elsie has lived alone in the village. Despite its isolation, Monowi attracts visitors during the summer months, who come to experience its unique charm and assist Elsie with her daily tasks.
