We have often heard of weird jobs like professional sleeper or mourner. Today, we’ll talk about one such bizarre job. As per the Oddity Central portal, one of these bizarre professions is the professional dog or cat food taster. Yes, it will be pretty hard to digest for some of the users, but becoming a food taster for these animals is a reality. As reported in the portal, an entry-level position in the quality department would typically pay about Rs 25,01,385 a year. An experienced professional could draw up to Rs 62,53,462. Now the question arises, what are the specifications of this job? Well, as the name points out, it involves tasting dog or cat food to make sure it matches with the premium brand’s exacting quality standards. Tasters regularly open sample tins of each freshly made batch of dog (or cat) food and then proceed to smell and eat it.

The experienced or professional tasters are trained to identify flavours that these animals, especially dogs tend to enjoy or reject. Philip Wells, a chief taster, revealed more about it to the Oddity Central and said, “Although dogs’ palates are different to ours, taste is an important quality to check to ensure each different ingredient is perfectly balanced in just the right way. Trying the food is also a good way to pick up on the nuances of the cooking: this works especially well on the dry kibbles”.

Wells also said that he loves dog food, and he doesn’t have any apprehensions about the tasting. He explained that the meat used in pet food has to be derived from animals passed as fit for human consumption, under the Animals Feed Regulations 2010. According to him, his firm uses human-grade freshly prepared raw food in all its recipes. It is not an easy task performing this job due to the high-pressure deadlines and the occasional surprises, but Wells said that he enjoys his job. According to the chief taster, he finds it rewarding because it helps pets become happier and healthier.
