A woman named Melody Felicano Johnson, 40, has pleaded guilty to poisoning her husband Roby Johnson’s coffee after he caught her red-handed pouring bleach into his drink. Roby, a US Air Force officer, witnessed this with the help of the secret cameras in their home. As per the Daily Star portal, Melody had pleaded guilty to two instances of poisoning food or drink for depositing the poisonous chemical into her husband’s coffee machine on July 11 and 18. As per the 13 News portal, Melody pleaded guilty to the lesser crimes, and the attempted murder charge she initially faced upon arrest was dismissed in return. Now, Melody is set to be sentenced on May 10 as prosecutors are reportedly suggesting that she serve at least two years in prison. Melody hails from Arizona, United States of America, and is currently being held on a £200k (Rs 1,67,22,260) bond.
As per the court documents, Melody’s husband Roby had suspected that she was trying to kill him to obtain the monetary benefits after his demise. They have a child together and were going through a divorce during the time she attempted the poisoning. “He stated she knew that he would prep his coffee pot to be ready at night so that in the morning he just needed to turn it on to make his coffee,” court documents show. “At that time he stopped drinking the coffee but continued to pretend to drink.”
Roby had his first instance of doubts regarding his wife in March 2023 when the coffee served to him by the wife tasted strange. He set up a camera to catch her in the act and even submitted evidence of the same to the police on July 6, 2023, but they rejected it on account of insufficient evidence. Undeterred, he set up a second camera concealed as a fire alarm. The Air Force official then returned to the police department on July 18 to provide additional evidence. This time, the police officials had every reason to believe because the new footage allegedly showed shocking footage of Melody tipping bleach into the coffee machine before brewing. Following this footage, she was detained.
