Lord Hanuman is traditionally regarded as a ‘Baal Brahmachari’ or eternal bachelor, abstaining from romantic entanglements, as per the Hindu scriptures. Consequently, prayers concerning matters of love or romance are not typically directed towards Lord Hanuman, who is instead venerated for protection from danger. Hence, it may come as a surprising revelation that there exists a Hanuman temple where couples come to solemnise their marriages.

Located in the Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad, an ancient Hanuman temple known as Laganiya Hanumanji is renowned for facilitating marriage ceremonies. Couples who tie the knot at this temple are believed to be blessed with a harmonious and blissful married life. Operated by the Jai Shri Dada Hanuman Charitable Trust, this temple has gained global recognition, attracting couples not only from Ahmedabad but also from cities across India and even from abroad, including Mumbai, Udaipur and Sirohi.

The tradition of conducting marriage ceremonies in this temple reportedly began after the devastating earthquake that struck Gujarat in 2001. In the aftermath of the disaster, all the courts were temporarily relocated to the Meghani Nagar area, where a small Hanuman temple was situated. Upon application by attorneys to conduct marriage ceremonies in the temple, approval was granted, leading to a surge in marriages being solemnised there.

Although the courts have since been relocated, the practice of holding marriages at the temple has endured. Notably, the temple facilitates inter-religious marriages, including unions between Hindus and Muslims, making it a truly unique institution in this regard.

To arrange a marriage at the temple, the prospective couple must submit a marriage application form to the temple office along with supporting documents such as age certificates, identification proofs, residency certificates and identification documents for two witnesses. Signatures are also obtained for the temple’s register book. Additionally, for couples hailing from overseas, an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) form is available. Following the marriage ceremony, the temple issues a marriage certificate to the newlyweds.

While Lord Hanuman is traditionally associated with celibacy, the Laganiya Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad stands out as a venue where couples seek divine blessings for their marital journey, showcasing the temple’s unique role in fostering love and union.
