The family court in Bhopal saw a peculiar case when a newly married woman sought a divorce after her husband took her on a trip to Ayodhya and Varanasi even after the couple decided that they would be visiting Goa and South India. As per the Free Press Journal, the case was reported on Friday. It was 10 days after the couple returned from the trip to the holy cities. The couple, who stays in Piplani, got married just five months ago in August 2023. The woman claimed that she earns well and her husband, who works in IT, also has a lucrative salary. Therefore, they can comfortably afford an overseas honeymoon trip.
However, her husband turned down her suggestion for international travel, citing his parent’s health, and claimed that he must look after his parents. However, he agreed to visit Goa and South India. Earlier this month, her husband booked air tickets to Ayodhya and Varanasi. He booked the tickets as his mother wanted to visit the city ahead of Ram Mandir’s consecration on January 22. The woman was only informed about this upcoming trip, a day before the flight was scheduled. At the time, the woman did not protest this change in plans but filed for divorce after returning. Her husband told the counselors at the family court that his wife was blowing the issue out of proportion. Advocate Shail Awasti who practices at Bhopal Family Court said the couple was being counselled.
India has some of the lowest divorce rates in the world. However, with time divorces are becoming stigmatised and hence divorce rates are slowly increasing.
In October 2023, Tanya Appachu Kaul, a lawyer, and digital content creator, made a video that mentioned some of the ‘most absurd reasons for divorce’.

In the video, Kaul mentioned reasons such as “Wife dressed in vulgar manner during honeymoon,” “Husband is preparing for UPSC & can’t give her any time”, “Wife refused to touch husband’s feet”, and “Wife can’t cook and had to leave to work without breakfast” as grounds for filing for separation. This clip has over 1.5 lakh likes. Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “This is what happens when people don’t get to know each other before getting married or this is their first relationship.”
