EXCLUSIVE: Bangladesh Home Minister Says PM Sheikh Hasina Has Fled, Army To Take Control Of Nation
Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told CNN-News18 that the army is taking control of the governance of the country.

Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Monday said the nation’s embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled Dhaka and the army will temporarily take control of the governance of the nation. Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Khan said: “Sheikh Hasina has resigned. I have received the information that she has resigned”.

When asked if the army would temporarily take over the government, he said: “Yes, most probably the Army will take over”.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled following more than a month of deadly anti-government protests.

Hasina, who has ruled since 2009, had defied weeks of demands for her to stand down but fled following a brutal day of unrest on Sunday in which nearly 100 people died.

Hasina, 76, fled the country by helicopter after protesters had stormed Ganabhaban, the prime ministerial residence, in Dhaka.

Bangladesh’s army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman said Monday he will form an interim government after Hasina resigned and fled the capital.

“We will form an interim government,” Waker said in a broadcast to the nation on state television, confirming that Sheikh Hasina had resigned.
