One of the best selling Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks in India, other than the Alto, has to be the Swift. It has witnessed a fan following in the country unlike any other and has hence dominated the market for years. Now, the next generation of the Swift has been unveiled at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show.
Expected to be launched in India by early 2018, the car comes with updated styling and a long list of features.
Based on the all-new Heartect platform by Suzuki, the chassis is claimed to be lighter and harder than before. This has been achieved by the use of a highly rigid frame which reduces the reinforcements which in turn reduces the overall weight of the car. The advantage of this weight reduction is that the car will feel zippier than before as there is less weight for the engine to lug around and at the same deliver a better fuel efficiency.
The car has been unveiled with two engine options - a 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine that focuses on performance and a 1.2-litre DualJet engine. There's also the SHVS mild-hybrid offering which focuses on providing high fuel economy. Although, there have been no confirmation as to what state of tune will the Swift come in India with, it will be interesting to see what the power figures and engine choices are given the fuel quality available in our country.
When it comes to dimensions, the new Swift is 10 mm shorter in length than the current Swift, making it easier to handle, while its wheelbase is 20 mm longer, which should allow for more cabin space. Vehicle height is 15 mm lower and vehicle width is 40 mm wider, which accentuates the Swift's low and wide form.
At the front, the new Swift gets a set of newly designed sweptback headlamps that come with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) along with a new bumper and grille design.
The side profile of the car remains similar to the current generation Swift and sports the trademark blacked-out A-pillar and new diamond-cut allow wheels. It also gets a floating roof touch, just like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
The back gets a new bumper and tail lamps, which also get the LED-touch, are now stubbier than before and incorporate a nicely tucked in spoiler with a stop light.
The interiors of the new Swift are now sportier and sharper, thanks to the twin-pod instrument cluster. There's also the touchscreen infotainment unit which is now becoming a norm in top-end Maruti Suzuki cars, which means that it could come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
What remains to be seen is which features out of this lot make it to the Indian model and what kind of a response does the updated DZire gets, which is expected to be launched in the coming months.
