The health department urges those with multiple health issues (comorbidities) to take the third vaccine dose.

In response to the increasing cases of JN1 variant of Covid-19 in Karnataka, the state government launched a vaccination drive to curb the virus’ transmission. Reports suggest that the government is considering the distribution of Corbevax vaccines from today. Only around 27% of Karnataka residents have received precautionary doses, leading to several Covid-19-related deaths. Over 1.5 crore individuals qualify for the additional vaccine doses. The health department urges those with multiple health issues (comorbidities) to take the third vaccine dose. In the initial phase, the government aims to procure 30,000 Corbevax vaccines for the campaign.

India reported a surge in Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, registering 602 new infections in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The data indicated five deaths, distributed across Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The total active cases decreased by 125 to 4,440, with 722 individuals discharged from hospitals.

The rise in Covid-19 cases is linked to the emergence of the new JN 1 variant and cold weather conditions. In response, the Centre has urged states and Union Territories to stay vigilant and prepare for potential challenges. Kerala and Karnataka are particularly impacted by the JN.1 variant, while Delhi, which reported its initial case of the sub-variant JN.1 last week, now has a total of 16 cases according to the latest data.

The JN.1 sub-variant of the virus has been identified in 11 states and union territories, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Telangana, Punjab, Haryana, and Odisha, in addition to Kerala, Karnataka, and Delhi. According to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), as of January 2, a total of 511 cases of the JN.1 series variant have been reported across these regions. INSACOG’s data indicates that 239 Covid cases in December and 24 cases in November showed the presence of the JN.1 variant.
