WATCH: Rohit Sharma Breaks AB de Villiers' 8-year-old Record for Most Sixes in a Calendar Year
It was the 59th maximum Rohit smashed this year in ODIs. In fact, it was the first big hit from Rohit in his innings against the Netherlands that took him to the record books.

Rohit Sharma reached a phenomenal milestone on Sunday, making his Diwali a tad more electrifying. Batting against the Netherlands in their last league game in the World Cup 2023, the Indian skipper set the new record for most sixes in ODIs in a calendar year, shattering the 8-year-old record set by former South Africa captain AB de Villiers in 2019.

Rohit reached the feat in the seventh over after clearing the long-on fence off a Collin Ackerman delivery, tossed up and outside off. The former fetched it on one leg and deposited it into the second tier of the Chinnaswamy stands.

Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first in Bengaluru with an unchanged combination.

“Whether we have batted first or bowled first, we have done extremely well. Another opportunity to play well today and tick all the boxes. Extremely happy with how we have played in this tournament. Hats off to the guys who have stood up at different times and taken the responsibility,” Rohit said after winning the toss.

India is atop the points standings with 16 points from eight wins – the only unbeaten side in the tournament. They will be aiming for a clean sweep in the league stage ahead of the semi-finals, where the two-time champions will take on fourth-placed New Zealand in the first semi-final at Mumbai on Nov. 15.

The Netherlands has four points from eight games from its two wins against South Africa and Bangladesh. They are placed tenth in the standings and need a win against India to move to six points and edge out eighth-placed Bangladesh, which would confirm their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
