Gujarat Giants’ Sayali Satghare became the first-ever concussion substitute in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). She replaced injured Dayalan Hemalatha in the fixture against Delhi Capitals in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Satghare took the field in the 15th over of the first innings when Hemalatha suffered a blow on her forehead while attempting a catch at deep mid-wicket off Kathryn Bryce’s delivery. Hemalatha missed the chance to dismiss Jess Jonassen but injured herself in the process. The ball came straight to her but it popped out and she couldn’t grab it on the rebound as well. She also hurt her shoulder and was taken off the field by the physio.
The injury was severe enough to ensure Hemalatha did not take any further part in the second innings and Satghare became the first concussion sub in the league’s short history.
Mumbai-based Satghare was originally roped into the Gujarat setup as an injury replacement for Kashvee Gautam. She went unsold in the WPL 2024 players auction last year and will now receive her base price remuneration of Rs 10 lakh.
Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Giants
Captain Meg Lanning’s fifty and a cunning spell of left-arm spin by Jess Jonassen drove Delhi Capitals to a slick 25-run victory over Gujarat Giants. Lanning was the Capitals’ guiding force to an adequate 163 for eight despite a late flurry of wickets.
The Giants’ chase never grew wings, ending up with 138 for eight despite Ashleigh Gardner’s well-timed 40 off 31 balls as they crashed to their fourth defeat on the bounce.
Jonassen led the Capitals’ bowling with a shrewd spell (3/22) and she received very good support from Radha Yadav (3/20). The win also propelled Delhi to the top of the table with six points.
