Director Aanand L Rai opened up about working with Shah Rukh Khan in a recent interview. The filmmaker and the superstar collaborated on Zero, which released in 2018. Although the subject was unique, the film did not fair well at the box office. The director revisited the days on sets with SRK and said with that he ‘would fight’ over the budget of the film. For the unversed, Zero was made on a high budget. The film heavily depended on the VFX to show Shah Rukh as a vertically challenged person.
Speaking with Mashable India, Aanand opened up about Zero’s budget. He confessed that he and Shah Rukh ‘would fight’ over the high budget. He then said with a laugh, “He is a king and I would think so much money… why?” The filmmaker praised Shah Rukh for his commitment to Zero.
“The making of that one film was like making five movies because we would have to take every shot five times. After Shah Rukh saw me for the first 3-4 days, he told me ‘You don’t stress about anything, I will do it.’ I would say, ‘Sir, you will get tired,’” Aanand said. Speaking about SRK’s dedication, Rai compared it with a machine. He said that while a machine could fail, SRK won’t. “He can give the same shot the same way five times,” he said.
Aanand added that after they realised the massive project at hand, he considered asking Shah Rukh if they should ask the character. “After a while, I was like ‘you walk as you want’ but he wanted to go ahead and do it. He takes big risks so what he gets out of it is his own,” he said.
Shah Rukh headlined Zero and shared the screen with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. After the film failed at the box office, the superstar took a break from the big screen and returned last year with Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki.
