Govt signs airport deal with GMR, GVK
The Government has signed the Delhi and Mumbai airports modernisation agreement with the GMR and GVK consortia on Tuesday.

New Delhi: The Government has signed the Delhi and Mumbai airports modernisation agreement with the GMR and GVK consortia on Tuesday, even as the Delhi HC gets ready to deliver its verdict on the case this week.

The newly constituted boards of the joint ventures have signed the operation, maintenance and development agreements with the Airports Authority of India.

However, the Government's urgency in handing over the airports has angered the Left parties.

They had even sought an appointment with the Prime Minister on this issue but were unable to get one. Left leaders have threatened to intensify their agitation.

The GMR group has won the bid for modernising Delhi airport and the GVK group for the Mumbai airport.

Ahead of the signing, the directorate general of civil aviation granted licence to the Delhi airport on Monday. The Mumbai airport is expected to get its licence on Tuesday.

This is for the first time that an airport under the airports authority of India has been granted a licence.

The licence is for six months and will throw open Delhi airport to regular auditing by the DGCA even after the private players step in.

Anil Ambani's Reliance Airport Developer's Group is upset by the Government's decision. The company sought a stay, which was dismissed by the Delhi HC. If the HC verdict goes in favour of RIL Airport, GMR & GVK will not be able to claim any compensation.
