Govt to launch 3G services in telecom
Very soon mobile phones are going to be complete business and entertainment tools, once 3G services roll out.

New Delhi: Very soon your mobile phone isn't going to be just a phone. It's going to be a complete business and entertainment tool, once 3G services roll out.

3G is a radio communications technology that will create a "bit pipe" for providing mobile access to internet-based services.

3G services will add an invaluable mobile dimension to services that are already becoming an integral part of modern business life: Internet and Intranet access, video-conferencing and interactive application sharing.

Key features of 3G systems are a high degree of commonality of design worldwide, compatibility of services, use of small pocket terminals with worldwide roaming capability, Internet and other multimedia applications, and a wide range of services and terminals.

With the government ready to usher in 3G services, one will be able to watch movies and surf the net much faster. But existing operators may have to bid afresh for 3G licenses.

"We feel new entrepreneurs should be given a chance. We also want 3G prices to be low, so we may go for separate license for 3G," Dayanidhi Maran, Telecom Minister, said.

Maran also said that long distance calls would become cheaper soon. They may even cost as much as a local call.

"We are soon going to ask TRAI to go for a revenue sharing regime for ADC which is necessary for India One," Maran said.

But the government says it will not allow Internet service providers to use BSNL and MTNL telephone lines for broadband services. Private players will have to set up their own copper lines.

What's your reaction?
