Mumbai: The market ended flat amid weak global cues. However, action was seen in midcap stocks. Cement and real estate stocks were the stars of the day on back of Supreme Court verdict. The Supreme Court has given go ahead for development of property by Mumbai mill owners.
The Sensex closed down 9.69 points at 10725.67. It touched an intraday high of 10753.13 and an intraday low of 10661.62.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 38.47 points or 0.61 per cent at 6,359.41. The BSE Midcap Index closed up 42.72 points or 0.86 per cent at 5,029.23.
The market breadth was mixed, about 1279 shares advanced, 1204 shares declined, and 73 shares remained unchanged.
The total market turnover today was at Rs 46,361.53 crore.
The BSE Capital Goods Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.13 per cent at 7,941.50 amid gains in Siemens, Aban Loyd Chiles, Larsen, ABB, KEC Infrastructure Bharat Electronics and Alstom Projects.
FMCG stocks like McDowell, HLL, Colgate, Nirma, and P&G also firmed up. The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.96 per cent at 2,045.94.
Select buying was also seen in consumer durables stocks. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.26 per cent at 3,274.98.
However, the BSE IT Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.27 per cent at 3,739.36 amid losses in Satyam, HCL Tech, MphasiS BFL, Hexaware Tech, Wipro, HCL Info, Infosys and TCS.
Banking stocks like UTI Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra, IOB, Andhra Bank and PNB also ended lower. The BSE Bankex closed down 0.79 per cent at 5,227.11.
Losses were also seen in some metal and pharma stocks. The BSE Metal Index closed down 0.58 per cent at 7,879.57 and the BSE Healthcare Index closed down 0.52 per cent at 3,649.56.
Select oil and auto stocks also lost ground. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.20 per cent at 4,535.86 and the BSE Auto Index closed down 0.13 per cent at 5,338.85.
